Keeping the Noise
Down with this Machine
When I first became a therapist I was baffled by the extensive, and almost mandatory use of white noise machines–a regular sight just outside the doors of most therapists. In fact, upon his first visit to my office, my husband was concerned that maybe our air conditioning was broken because of the loud consistent whooshing sound coming from each office.
With COVID, I have started using my white noise machine for more than just maintaining privacy in my office. And I have to tell you, if you are looking for a way to help minimize distracts in all aspects of your life, this little white noise machine is the thing to get!
All moms have heard the benefits of a white noise machine to help your little ones fall asleep because the sound is similar to what it sounds like inside the womb. But, the white noise created by the device helps to drown out street noises, neighbours, snoring siblings (or your partner!) and reduce anxiety through soothing and peaceful noises. (Sounds like a pretty good info-merical right?!)
How do these machines actually block out noise? The white noise machine continually outputs sound at a consistent level; then, when a loud noise happens (like a door slamming, car horn honking, or a snore) your brain doesn’t hear it as sharply and ignores it (letting you sleep more).
But there are so many other uses for these white noise machines than just when it’s time to get some shut eye. Here are a few of my favorites in the past week:
Privacy in the office
Whether you are working from home, or working in your regular office, distracting noises happen! Use the machine while you are working and you will find those distractions few are far between.
Help your baby sleep anywhere
While you are going from one place to another, your baby often needs to nap! Whether you are on a train, in a car in the middle of traffic or walking around the block, use white noise to help give the baby a peaceful nap.
Dealing with snores
We love our partners, but we know that when the snoring happens, it pulls our love just a bit thinner. Use the white noise yourself to help minimize the distraction of your partner’s noisy sleep habits.
Creating a quiet, calming place to minimize anxiety
Finding a quiet space to tap into some mindfulness or meditation is much easier when you can take this soothing sound along with you. Turn it on and zone out regardless of where you are.
