Adapting to Adaptogens

Adapting to Adaptogens

Did you know you can help manage your stress and anxiety with plants?

Because I did not.

Look, I try my hardest not to go full-on crystal charging, plant-based, “the universe has spoken” Therapist on you, because that is SO NOT ME. But ya’ll, when you learn new shit, you gotta be willing to ADAPT. So I’m bringing you along on the path with me. To enlightenment. Haha, just kidding. ⠀⠀⠀⠀

Okay, so ironically, these plants (herbs and some mushrooms) are called adaptogens because of their unique ability to tolerate, survive, and perform under a wide range of stressors. When taken in supplemental extract form, they help the body do the same by slowing our adrenal response and maintaining a longer resistance and focus phase to overcome the initial alarm before exhaustion sets in.

Why would I go so out of the range of my normal content to share this with you? I’ve been taking a few for the past few weeks to stave off some of the symptoms caused by my hormones being off and I have HONESTLY noticed a very serious difference. I dove into research and have found that though it’s still widely considered pseudoscience here (I was able to find some peer reviewed evidence), some countries use adaptogens *regularly* in psychiatric prescribing.

The more you know, right?

I have been taking Rhodiola Rosea, Diindolymethane, and Astragalus Root.

But there are LOTS of others so let me share some you may recognize:

  • Ginseng (American or Siberian)
  • Ashwagandha
  • Goji Berry
  • Licorice Root
  • Holy Basil
  • Turmeric

If you’re noticing that you are experiencing higher levels of stress and fatigue (um, hello EVERYONE bc we are STILL IN A PANDEMIC OMFG WHY?!) give some a try and let me know what you think!

Or if you’re well versed in adaptogens already, help a sister out and give us all the deets!

  1. I was really excited to try the ashwagandha bit. We got both a daytime and nighttime stress blend. We tried it for a few weeks, and honestly I didn’t feel a difference. I’ve heard great things, and know it does wonders for others, I just didn’t take to it.
